From the 5 star awarded Kingdom Theatre Company comes a World Premiere musical with authentic Highland Dancing. Based in Fife as a registered charity the Company promote new writing and training in the performing arts. This is their fifth Edinburgh Fringe.
What was the inspiration for this performance?
This new show Just Like The Movies is a follow up to last year's Emerald Diaries and follows a young dancer from Leith
Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?
I agree it is and numerous shows at the Fringe explore this
How did you become interested in making performance?
I have been featuring shows in print and radio since the 1980's and 5 years ago my girl friend typed up one of the several stores I had written in a notebook. We found a director and cast and debuted at Leith Festival before embracing the mighty Fringe with our show Sinatra: the Final Curtain
Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?
As a charity the Company will have professional staff mentoring student actors, dancers and crew as career development
Does the show fit with your usual productions?
In as far as original material, yes.
What do you hope that the audience will experience?
The comedy and good feeling along with the appreciation of talented dance and new songs
What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?
We value quality throughout whether its in costume, plot or script and continue this with a free programme for the audience with all the credits.
Mary (played by Lucy Duffy) is a young dancer from Leith seeking new challenges. Television talent shows perhaps or Highland Dancing? Her boyfriend Andrew (played by Michael McLean) is not too keen though so maybe a rethink there too? He thinks their love is just like the movies but Mary is not too sure. Dance Teacher Morag (played by Jacqueline Hannan) struggles to keep order and just wants them to dance at the Military Tattoo. Comedy and colourful Scottish dancing from the girls of the spectacular Tartan Feet Company add to Willie Logan’s new original songs performed live by the cast from rhythmic masterpieces to show stopping Broadway numbers Just Like The Movies.
The majority of the cast and crew are local students gaining experience in performance and stage craft with tuition and guidance from industry professionals. The dancers, technical crew and most of the performing talent are all here for their first Fringe.
The show is written by John Murray and directed by Laura Reed.
